Nikon 1 Nikkor 18.5 mm f 1.8 Review

Intro

I recently received a new Nikon lens, the Nikkor 1 18.5 mm f/1.8. This new prime lens, it is the sharpest and fastest lens in my collection. All of my Nikon lens have use cases, but the 18.5 is the most versatile. Weighting in at 2.5 ounces, it is now the lightest lens in my camera bag. The weight and overall size is impressive considering this lens contains one more lens element than the 10 mm Wide Angle Prime. The low light samples speak volumes of this lens capabilities. The f/1.8 aperture allow for capturing low ISO hand held images, which were previously unobtainable by other 1 series lens. The 46 degree angle of view is great for portraits and street photography. After reviewing my captured images, the detail impressed me to the extent I needed to provide a review.

History and Specs

Nikon released the Nikkor 18.5 in September of 2012. It was Nikon’s second prime, and sixth overall lens for the 1 series. The 1” sensor in the 1 series cameras, makes this lens is equivalent to 50 mm in 35 mm standards (2.7x crop times 18.5 mm = 49.9 mm). The lens contains 8 lens elements, which contain one aspherical lens element. The lens is available in silver, black and white to match your camera. An optional lens hood is offered to block stray light, thus minimizing lens flare. The 18.5 forgoes lens image stabilization due to the fast aperture. The history of the affordable 50 mm lens quickly made these lens popular among photographers.

Conclusion

If someone asks, “Do I really need this lens?,” my answer would be yes! If your 1 series camera came with the 10-30mm kit lens, this lens would be an excellent addition to your gear. The sharp details and low light capabilities are two reasons to invest in this lens. The 18.5 mm fits comfortably between the 10 mm f 2.8 Wide Angle and the 30-110mm Telephoto. The price of the 18.5 mm is in line with 50 mm lens for other brands and camera systems. Photographers should note the 18.5 mm has one of the lowest prices of any Nikkor 1 lens (as of Jan 4, 2015). I opted to purchase a Vello lens hood to accompany the lens. As stated in the intro, the images speak for themselves. In my opinion, this is one of the best Nikkor 1 lens to own!
